The 100th anniversary of Elizabeth's birth celebrated on a world first gold sovereign
In April 1926 a young princess was born with no expectation of a crown — and therefore no commemorative coin to mark her arrival. No one could have foreseen that Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor would become the longest reigning monarch in British history a constant presence across a century of national life. One hundred years later the significance of this centenary has been formally recognised. To honour the moment of her birth — and to mark what would have been her 100th birthday — permission was granted for a sovereign of equal symbolic weight: the world’s first Gold 100th Sovereign.
A world-first gold 100th sovereign created for a once in a century event
It is exceptionally rare for any new denomination to be added to the gold sovereign coinage. Such changes occur only in response to events of the highest national significance — which is precisely why the Queen’s birth centenary has been honoured with the creation of the world’s first Gold 100th Sovereign. The tradition of gold sovereign coinage dates back hundreds of years and this new Gold 100th Sovereign has been issued with the explicit approval of Buckingham Palace and His Majesty King Charles III. That permission was granted for this unique gold coin recognises the profound significance of the Queen’s birth centenary and the unique suitability of a 100th sovereign to mark the occasion.
Its denomination — the 100th sovereign — was chosen deliberately to mirror the 100 years since her birth uniting event and coin in a single elegant expression of tribute.
A design rooted in Elizabeth’s royal beginning
Inspired by the 1926 half crown the highest denomination coin in circulation at the time of her birth premier coin artist Arianna Ciccone has revived the heraldic style that defined early 20th century royal coinage. The result is the closest you can come to holding the coin that should have been struck in 1926. The obverse depicts the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by world renowned artist Jody Clark creating a poignant connection between the monarch who was born in 1926 and the monarch who now reigns.
Proof struck in pure 24 carat gold
To honour the importance of this centenary the 100th Sovereign breaks with tradition in ways collectors will immediately recognise as significant – being in struck in pure 24 carat gold. The choice of 24 carat gold is especially meaningful. Traditional sovereigns are struck in 22 carat gold but for this centenary tribute the mint chose the purest form of gold available — a symbolic gesture reflecting both the importance of the event and the Queen’s enduring legacy. Each coin is struck to the highest Proof standard achieving exceptional clarity and depth on both sides.
A symbolic mintage — one for every week of Elizabeth’s life
To reflect the Queen’s extraordinary life the edition is strictly limited to 5 030 coins worldwide — one for every week of Elizabeth II’s 96 year life. Such low mintage world first editions are precisely the types of coins that collectors prize most highly. Once the mintage is fully allocated no further coins will ever be struck.
