The complete set of coins from The Queen’s Coronation year
As
the nation marks the Birth Centenary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it is
fitting to look back to the beginning of one of the most remarkable reigns in
British history. This exclusive collection brings together all ten original
coins issued in 1953, the year of the Queen's Coronation, presented in a
stunning limited-edition set
The
Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953 symbolised a new chapter for
Britain. Following the hardships of the post-war years, a young Queen brought
renewed optimism and hope to the nation. To mark this historic occasion, the
Royal Mint prepared a new coinage featuring redesigned reverse motifs and the
first coin portrait of the young Queen by renowned artist Mary Gillick.
This
superb set includes every coin issued in 1953:
- Coronation Crown
- Halfcrown
- Florin
- English Shilling
- Scottish Shilling
- Sixpence
- Brass Threepence
- Penny
- Halfpenny
- Farthing
Each
coin is an original 1953 issue and together they form a complete snapshot of
British coinage at the dawn of the Elizabethan age.
One-Year-Only Types
What makes the coins of 1953 especially
significant is that they were struck for just a single year in this exact form.
A change to Queen Elizabeth II's royal titles in 1954 meant that the coins
issued in her Coronation year were the only examples ever produced with these
inscriptions, making them highly important one-year-only types for collectors.
Featuring the First Coins of the Queen's Reign
The obverse of every coin bears the celebrated
first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. Widely regarded as one of
the most elegant coin portraits ever produced by the Royal Mint, it remains the
only circulating portrait to depict Her Majesty uncrowned.
The Iconic 1953 Coronation Crown
At the heart of the collection sits the famous
1953 Coronation Crown, issued specifically to commemorate the Coronation
itself. It was the first commemorative Crown of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and
has since become one of the most iconic and sought-after coins in British
numismatics.
Original Brilliant Uncirculated Coins
These are not replicas or modern restrikes.
Every coin in the set is an original Brilliant Uncirculated example dating from
1953 and preserved in remarkable condition for more than seventy years. Their
sharp detail and mint-fresh surfaces make them some of the finest examples of
their type that collectors are likely to encounter.
Enhanced with Gold and Silver
To create a truly prestigious presentation, each
original coin has been individually layered in precious metals. The cupronickel
denominations are layered in pure silver, the bronze coins in rose gold, and
the brass threepence in 24-carat gold. The Coronation Crown receives a
particularly striking treatment, featuring silver, rose gold and 24-carat gold
accents.
Limited to Just 499 Sets Worldwide
Because sourcing original Brilliant Uncirculated
coins from 1953 is increasingly difficult, availability is strictly limited to
only 499 sets. Each collection is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity
and presented in a bespoke display case worthy of these historic coins.
More
than seventy years after her Coronation, and in the year of her Birth
Centenary, these original coins offer collectors the opportunity to own the
very first coins of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, brought together in one
historic set and preserved for future generations.
