A landmark first — officially licensed with the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force
On the 8th of May 1945, Britain awoke to a new dawn. After six long years of war, hardship, and sacrifice, the moment the nation had longed for had finally arrived—Victory in Europe had been achieved. Church bells, which had fallen silent for much of the war, rang out in celebration, while the streets filled with joyous crowds waving flags, singing, and embracing strangers. It was a day like no other — a day of relief, triumph, and remembrance.
Eighty years on, as we remember the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom, a very special coin has been struck to commemorate that defining moment — the VE Day 80th Anniversary Fine Silver Sovereign.
A First in the History of the Sovereign
This is the FIRST-EVER Silver Sovereign to be officially licensed by the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. Struck in 99.9% fine silver to the finest Proof quality, this limited edition of just 1,945 coins commemorates one of the most significant anniversaries of VE Day to date.
For centuries, Sovereigns have been traditionally struck in gold, making Silver Sovereigns exceptionally rare. Our national mint only introduced Sovereigns struck in silver earlier this year, marking a significant moment in numismatic history. The 2025 VE Day 80th Anniversary Silver Sovereign represents a turning point—not only as the first-ever officially licensed Silver Sovereign with the Ministry of Defence but also as a highly collectable edition, beautifully crafted in 999 fine silver.
A Masterpiece of Minting
The VE Day 80th Anniversary Silver Sovereign has been meticulously crafted to the highest standard. Each coin is struck from silver with a purity of 99.9%, popularly known as ‘three-nines silver’, and finished to a flawless PROOF quality. A Proof coin represents the highest standard of minting. Unlike standard circulating coins, every Proof piece is struck twice onto a specially prepared and polished blank using high-pressure dies, a process that enhances the depth, clarity, and precision of the design. The dies used to strike Proof coins are hand-polished and treated before each and every strike, ensuring an immaculate mirrored background (or ‘table’) that contrasts beautifully with the frosted relief of the design. This meticulous approach results in a coin of unparalleled quality, capturing every fine detail with absolute precision.
A Tribute to Triumph — The Story Behind the Design
Victory has been one of the most enduring allegorical figures in art, culture, and numismatics for centuries. Rooted in classical mythology, she personifies triumph, strength, and the achievement of peace through struggle. Just as Churchill’s “V for Victory” sign is now recognised as a peace symbol, so too has Victory’s image come to represent peace as much as triumph. For the VE Day 80th Anniversary Fine Silver Sovereign, Victory stands at the heart of the design. In her right hand, she holds palm branches, a symbol of triumph, while in her left, she raises a globe. Look closely, and you’ll see the globe is tilted to reveal the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. Inscribed at the edge are the immortal words of Winston Churchill: “This is your hour.”
A Rare Dual Design by Glyn Davies
Notably, Glyn Davies has also designed the official obverse effigy of King Charles III, making this a rare and historic pairing—where the same artist has created both sides of a Sovereign. Glyn’s portfolio includes designs for The Royal Mint’s Sapphire Jubilee £5 coin, the Tower of London series, and the Remembrance Day coin—a particularly personal piece, inspired by poppies from his late mother’s garden.
A Historic Tribute — Strictly Limited to Just 1,945 Worldwide
Availability is extremely limited, with a strict mintage of just 1,945 worldwide, reflecting the year of victory. Each coin is housed in a luxury presentation case and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its place as an exclusive collector’s piece. Once these coins are sold, no more will ever be minted. This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of history. Recognising the significance of this issue, Heritage Coins has secured the entire 1,945 mintage exclusively for collectors.
Free Presentation Case and Certificate of Authenticity
Your coin is also individually encapsulated to protect and preserve it for future generations. You will also receive a beautifully illustrated booklet, drawing on the Imperial War Museums’ archives, telling the story of VE Day and the events that led to it. It includes your Certificate of Authenticity and guarantees each coin’s provenance and limited edition status.
