The world's first-ever mechanical silver coin - officially licensed by the Royal Air Force
2021 marked a milestone in aviation history as it was 85 years ago, from Eastleigh Aerodrome, that the very first Spitfire took to the air on its maiden flight. Built to the pioneering design of R. J. Mitchell, the Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most iconic classic British fighter ever built. To mark the 85th Anniversary of the Spitfire’s first flight, this truly unique three-ounce silver coin has been crafted and officially issued under license with The Royal Air Force.
The Spirit of the iconic Supermarine Spitfre is captured on an equally iconic coin
It is said that the Spitfire married science, technology and art to create “a thing of beauty”. This was an aircraft of such agility, pluck and ingenious engineering that it as became an enduring symbol of the British fighting spirit. No other plane quite encapsulates the British spirit as well as the Supermarine Spitfire. Marrying the minters’ art with technical excellence, The Legends of the Royal Air Force Supermarine Spitfire Coin incorporates a perfectly engineered nose cone of a Supermarine Spitfire. But what is even more incredible is that the propellor blades rotate, making this the world's first-ever mechanical silver coin.
Three troy ounces of solid sterling silver with a mehcnical moving propellor
Crafted in three-ounces of 925 sterling silver, the coin diameter is sized at 50mm, larger than a regular coin, and struck to an almost proof-like finish. The design shows a viewpoint of the iconic Spitfire from front on. The immaculate finish allows every detail of the coin design to stand out with remarkable clarity due to the care and attention of craftsmen in producing the master tools.
Owing to the significance of the anniversary it commemorates, special permissions were given by the issuing authorities allowing this unique coin to be produced. This is a legal tender solid silver coin — albeit one that collectors will never wish to spend — and as such the obverse (the heads side of the coin) bears the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination, and issuing authority designation.
As exclusive as it is technically brilliant, the mintage of this legal-tender issue is a mere 85 worldwide
Our in-house coin experts, with over 40 years of combined experience in numismatics, have never seen a coin
like this before — each coin has been meticulously hand-crafted by skilled craftsmen and modellers. Due to the
complexities of making this world-first Silver coin, just 85 have been issued for worldwide release.
Available exclusively from The Bradford Exchange, the ultra low edition limit and official Royal Air Force approval status are attested to by the uniquely numbered Certificate of Authenticity which accompanies each edition. Completing the presentation, each coin is beautifully presented within a bespoke presentation box.
