The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during the afternoon of September 8, 2022, brought with it the end of two incredible stories — the 70-year reign of our longest reigning monarch and the 96-year life of a remarkable woman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. As the sad news was shared around the world, the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom were joined by millions more in Commonwealth nations and countries across the globe in solemn mourning.

A unique memorial design 

Designed by renowned artist Heena Rai, the obverse of the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Commemoratives takes its inspiration from the tiled floor of Westminster Abbey. The central shield,  inspired by the Royal Arms, is encircled by the inscription of the virtues so central to our longest-reigning monarch — Family, Service, Charity, Modernisation, Honour, and Duty.  Each of these values is the theme of one of the special editions in this memorial collection.
The central shield itself is separated into four quarters; in the top-right-you is a silhouette of Her Majesty on horseback, representing her lifelong love of horses and her fine equestrian skills. It also brings to mind Emma, the Queen’s pony, who stood solemnly beside the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park as Her Majesty’s funeral procession passed slowly by on its way to St George’s Chapel, where Her Majesty was laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Prince Philip. The orb, bottom left,  symbolises the sovereign’s eternal power; Windsor Castle, the Queen’s home and final resting place, with a flag at half-mast.
