In 2022, Her late Majesty's Platinum Jubilee year, special permission was granted for a set of Silver Maundy Coins to be issued

The tradition of Royal Maundy is perhaps one of the lesser-known Easter rituals that involve a very special set of silver coins gifted to a select group of people by the monarch on the Thursday before Easter. 

These are coins issued for the personal use of Britain’s Kings and Queens, coins that you may have never heard about, most probably have never seen, and almost certainly will never have held in your own hands and yet they belong to a tradition that dates back over 1,000 years. 

The Platinum Jubilee Maundy Coins of Queen Elizabeth II - a rarely issued tribute to a unique Royal Jubilee

Royal Maundy Money coins are historically exclusively for the use of the monarch; however, in celebration of the Queen’s historic Platinum Jubilee in 2022, four special-edition Silver Maundy coins were approved by Buckingham Palace for release. This is only the second commemorative Maundy Money set to ever be approved throughout the Queen’s long reign, and Heritage Coins have reserved the full mintage of this special-edition Platinum Jubilee Maundy Set for our collectors. 

The Royal Maundy Tradition Passes from Mother to Son

In 2022 as King Charles III continues the tradition of the Maundy service, he will probably reflect on the recent passing of his beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Her late Majesty rarely missed the Royal Maundy Service but was sadly forced to miss her Platinum Jubilee Maundy Service due to ill health. Charles, then Prince of Wales, attended the 2022 ceremony in his mother’s place to offer 96 deserving men and women, a number equal to the Queen’s age, two special purses containing what turned out to be Her late Majesty’s final Royal Maundy Money before she sadly passed away at Balmoral in September.

Each set contains a 1p, 2p, 3p and 4p Maundy coin struck in fine silver and featuring a unique design of arrangements of the letter ‘E’ for Elizabeth, creating a direct connection to the first silver Maundy coins of Charles II which featured similar arrangements of the letter ‘C’. The obverse on each of the coins features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
