Heritage Coins — looking after your coin collection

Top Tips for Taking Care of Your Collection

Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a hermetically sealed, environmentally controlled, secure storage facility! There are a few simple steps that anyone can take to ensure the coins in your collection are kept in the best possible condition and can be enjoyed for many years to come:

Storing coins

Every Heritage Coin is provided in a dedicated capsule, and each collection comes with a bespoke display folder or case. Both are designed to help you store, display and enjoy your coins for a lifetime, and then pass them on to be treasured by the next generation.

If you decide not to use the display folder or case, you can store coins in their capsules in a dedicated coin album or coin drawer. The key thing is to keep your coins in their capsules, which will protect them from dust, dirt and light.

Try and keep your collection in a room with a fairly consistent temperature and humidity, such as on a shelf or in a cabinet in a sitting room or study. Try and avoid unheated basements or attics, which can be prone to large swings in temperature.

Handling coins

We recommend that you keep your coins in their capsules at all times, and avoid touching them with your hands if possible.

If you do find you have to handle one of your coins, clean your hands with a hand sanitiser first, as the alcohol in these products is great at removing traces of oil and dirt from your hands. Try to hold your coin by its edges between your thumb and forefinger, and avoid touching its faces; even better, wear a soft cotton glove when handling your coins.

Cleaning coins

The best advice here is; don’t get your coins dirty! Keep them in their capsules and, if you do have to handle them, follow the advice above.

But if the worst happens and you do get a fingerprint or some dirt on one of your coins, remove it from its capsule and place it in a soft plastic container. Clean it gently in distilled water and a tiny amount of washing up liquid using your fingertips, never an abrasive cloth. Then leave it to air dry fully on a soft cloth before carefully placing it back in its capsule.
