When it comes to celebrating Christmas, there’s nothing quite like a nostalgic return to some of our favourite childhood stories. And what could be more charming than The Wind in the Willows?
The Wind in the Willows Christmas Coin — a beautifully crafted tribute to one of the most beloved children’s stories
For the first time, the original The Wind in the Willows artwork is brought to life with state-of-the-art minting on a charming Ten Pound Coin. The merry scene depicts carolling mice with a message that reads, “Villagers all this frosty tide, Let your doors swing open wide”. The inscription is taken from the first lines of the carol that the mice sing to Ratty & Mole at Mole End. Returning home through the wild woods, Mole and Rat take a detour and visit Mole’s long-forgotten home. A group of carol-singing field mice come to call, and although there is no pâté de foie gras or champagne on offer, there is a roaring fire and a jug of mulled ale. It’s the perfect evocation of the importance of home in the bleak depths of mid-winter.
“Villagers all, this frosty tide, Let your doors swing open wide, Though wind may follow, and snow beside, Yet draw us in by your fire to bide; Joy shall be yours in the morning!"
A masterpiece of minting — the extra-large 65mm diameter brings a classic to life
This truly impressive piece is struck to a supersize 65mm diameter, weighing an impressive 110 grams; it is fully layered with fine .999 Silver and struck to the highest quality Proof finish. The sheer size of this coin, almost three times the size of a £1 coin, allows for exceptional clarity and relief – that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Striking coins at this size to Proof standard is technically demanding as the larger a coin becomes, the more tonnage of pressure is required to impress the design into the coin to achieve a Proof finish. The result is a deeper and clearer relief that showcases the artistry of the design, making The Wind in the Willows Ten Pound Coin a true masterpiece of minting. Fully approved by Buckingham Palace, the obverse bears the portrait of the late Queen.
