The gold coin collectors have been waiting for, for nearly 200 years is finally released!
The first-ever gold quarter sovereign to feature Queen Victoria’s “young head” portrait is released in celebration of Queen Victoria’s bicentenary.
It was 200 years ago, on 24th May 1819, that Princess Alexandrina Victoria was born. Just like our current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who is Victoria’s great-great-granddaughter, it was never anticipated that she would ever become Queen – at the time she was fifth in line to the throne.Little did Victoria know she would become one of the most powerful women in British history, nor could she have anticipated she would become Britain’s longest reigning monarch, a record only surpassed over a century later, in 2015, by her great-great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II.
Victoria’s reign saw the British Empire expand until it covered a quarter of the globe; and one-third of the world’s population, it saw industrialisation on a scale never before imagined and saw political and social changes like never before. And of course, no coin is more synonyms with Britain and her Empire under Queen Victoria, than the gold sovereign. Yet no gold quarter sovereigns were ever issued during Queen Victoria’s reign. Now in 2019, to celebrate the bicentenary of Victoria’s birth this historical anomaly is finally put right!
World first gold coin, celebrating the bicentenary of Queen Victoria
To mark the bicentenary of Queen Victoria’s birth, and the lasting legacy of our long-reigning sovereign, a Queen Victoria Gold Quarter Sovereign has been approved for issue by Buckingham Palace. It features the “Young Head” portrait of Queen Victoria. This is the first time in history that Queen Victoria’s “Young Head” portrait has appeared on a gold quarter sovereign. Making this gold coin a ‘must’ for any collector — as it is the only way you can own a gold quarter sovereign depicting Queen Victoria’s effigy.
The Iconic “Young Head” Gold Quarter Sovereign — the gold coin collectors have been waiting nearly 200 years for
If the portrait on the 2019 Queen Victoria Bicentenary Gold Quarter Sovereign looks familiar it is because it features Wyon’s iconic “Young Head” design. This portrait was, of course, the inspiration for world most famous stamp the Penny Black stamp, and it was so was favoured by Queen Victoria herself, that it circulated on British coinage for an incredible 50 years.
A masterpiece of minting — in 22-carat gold
The Queen Victoria Gold Quarter Sovereign is struck in solid 22-carat gold, the traditional purity reserved for British Sovereigns, to a Brilliant Uncirculated finish. Master craftsmen have taken great care to recreate the exquisite detail of Wyon’s original design. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by acclaimed Commonwealth coin designer Joel Iskowitz.
It’s the edition limit that sets this gold coin apart
Just 1,819 have been authorised for release. Owing to the inherent difficulty and skill required to strike a coin of this beauty and quality this edition limit of this special collector’s edition gold coin has been set to just 1,819 worldwide and this mintage can never be repeated.
