The Battle of Britain was one of the truly great chapters in our nation’s history. In the spring of 1940, the storm clouds of the Second World War gathered across the English Channel. By the summer, the Nazi war machine had conquered much of Europe and Britain was its next target. The fate of the world was truly in the balance. The RAF was heavily outnumbered by the Luftwaffe, but Britain’s determination was strong. The RAF repelled the German aerial attack, day after day. Thanks to the swiftness of the Spitfire, and the dogged reliability of the Hurricane, the battle turned for Britain and by October Hitler had abandoned his plans for invasion. The extraordinary bravery and skill of the pilots of RAF Fighter Command gave courage and hope not only to the people of Britain but to all those in occupied Europe.

As a tribute to all those who played part in that defining chapter, a very special coin has been issued

There are few alive today who have direct knowledge of the Battle of Britain conflict, making it more important today, than ever, that we remember their sacrifice with a lasting commemoration. To preserve the memory of those that took part, a grand coin to match the significance of the 80th anniversary of the battle has been released. Officially approved by Buckingham Palace for release, The Battle of Britain Five Crown Coin features the planes that brought victory to Britain. A silhouette of a Spitfire propeller, and the number 80 mark the 80 years since the events of the Battle of Britain. Notably, just 1,940 coins were minted for release, to match the year of the event — an exceptionally small number for such an anniversary as important as this. With interest in military commemoratives so high, this seems barely enough for collectors’ across the world.

A ‘supersize’ 65mm Five crown coin

Struck to an immaculate proof finish and layered with pure silver, The Battle of Britain Five Crown Coin is minted to an impressively large 65mm diameter (almost three times larger than a £1 coin). Weighing 3.5 ounces (approx 110gm), its sheer size allows for exquisite detail and clarity — that has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

What makes this coin truly exceptional is that it features genuine pieces of metal from both a Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft embedded into the design

Layered in fine 999 Silver, the Battle of Britain Five Crown Coin features genuine pieces of metal that have been taken from a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane. This metal has then been embedded my master craftsmen into the number “80”. Due to intricacies of minting coin of this size and calibre, with hand-applied aircraft metal inlay, only a small number of coins were able to be struck, and the edition limit was set at an incredibly low 1,940. Given the significance of the occasion which this coin commemorates, we expect worldwide demand to exceed the number of coins minted.

Unique numbering makes each piece one of a kind

Each coin issued features a unique number within the edition limitUnique numbering makes your piece completely unique to you; the ultimate collectors’ piece.  The numbers will be allocated lowest numbers first, on a strictly ‘first-come-first-served basis’.

Free presentation box & certificate of authenticity

The coin comes presented in a bespoke presentation case individually encapsulated to protect and preserve both the coin and aircraft metal, which has been hand applied by skilled craftsmen. Included with your coin is an informative Certificate of Authenticity.
