  • All coins are heritage items painstakingly sourced by our experts and chosen for their excellent condition.

  • In 1965, The Royal Mint made history by issuing a coin to honour the life of a non-royal — Sir Winston Churchill, making this coin a truly unique collectable.

2024 marks 150 Years Since the Birth of Sir Winston Churchill

Ask anyone in the English-speaking world (or beyond) to name a British politician from the 20th century, and one name would probably keep cropping up – that of Winston Churchill.  Not only is he regarded as one of the most important leaders in British & world history, but he was also an accomplished journalist, legislator, artist and author, the latter recognised when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

But for many, Churchill is best remembered for his skilful leadership during the dark days of the Second World War that guided the nation to victory. His bulldog determination to ‘never give in’ lifted the spirits of a weary nation when Britain stood alone as the last bastion of freedom against the spread of Nazism in Europe. The whole world owes an eternal debt of gratitude to Churchill for the quality of his leadership — military, political and personal — during the most far-reaching war in history.

The 1965 Sir Winston Churchill Memorial British Year Set

In 1965, the death of Sir Winston Churchill left the entire nation in mourning, and The Royal Mint did something they had never done before. To honour the life of Winston Churchill, they released the first-ever coin to depict a non-royal. It was a testament to the high regard in which Churchill was held.

Churchill’s portrait was commissioned by his favourite sculptor, Oscar Nemon, and this coin, together with all the other British circulation coins from the year of Churchill’s passing, are included in this complete 1965 Sir Winston Churchill Memorial British Year Set.  This complete set of British coins, the first ever to include a crown coin depicting the portrait of Churchill himself, takes on added significance as the nation celebrates 150 years since his birth in 1874.

Hold a Genuine Piece of our Nation’s History in Your Hands

Heritage Coins has sought fine specimens of all nine coins from 1965. Carefully curated by our team of experts, these are all genuine British coins, each of them nearly sixty years old.  They are not replicas or modern commemorative strikings. These coins belong to a bygone era when money still had 'the look' and 'the feel' of money, and our change had nicknames such as a 'bob', 'tanner', and 'thru'penny bit'.

As you can imagine, due to the scarcity of these original coins, all minted nearly 60 years ago, these coins are now becoming increasingly difficult to find!

There are an ever-increasing number of buyers of old coins yet a finite supply. The availability of complete year sets, particularly those of notable dates, is dramatically diminishing. There may be a day in the not-too-distant future when they are so seldom seen as to be beyond the reach of most people. This historic presentation of the complete set of coins of 1965 features superb heritage designs depicting some of our most powerful national symbols, many of which would have been as familiar to Churchill as they were to our parents or grandparents, and it seems fitting that all nine are presented in one complete set in honour of our nation’s Greatest Briton. Majestic Britannia graces the penny; the florin, effectively the first decimal currency at a tenth of a pound, features the Double rose surrounded by leek, thistle and shamrock; also presented is the little lucky sixpence, affectionately known as a 'tanner', and Britain's favourite coin - the 12-sided thru'penny bit.

This limited edition coin set is not only a stunning showcase of numismatic craftsmanship but also a timeless tribute to one of the greatest leaders in history. Don't miss your chance to own this piece of history and relive the remarkable legacy of Winston Churchill. The coins come individually encapsulated and displayed together in a deluxe presentation case. An informative booklet and Certificate of Authenticity accompany each 1965 Churchill Memorial Coin Set with our compliments.
